Chainage on a road works schedule

What 'chainage' means when reading a council roads programme.

Chainage is distance measured along a road from a defined start point, given in metres. A works entry reading 'ch. 1780–2480' means the intervention ran between those two points along the road. Reading works schedules by chainage shows exactly which stretch of road — including a bridge section — a scheme actually touched.
