Approaching a Humpback or Narrow Bridge

Navigating humpback and narrow bridges safely requires reduced speed, careful observation, and a clear understanding of right-of-way.

Humpback and narrow bridges are common features on rural roads in both Ireland and the UK, presenting unique challenges for drivers. A humpback bridge typically has a steep incline and decline, creating a blind summit, while a narrow bridge restricts the width available for vehicles. Both types of bridges demand a cautious approach to ensure safety and prevent collisions. The Traffic Signs Manual and local road authority guidance often provide specific warnings and instructions for these structures.

When approaching a humpback bridge, the primary concern is the blind summit. Drivers cannot see what is on the other side, including oncoming traffic, pedestrians, or other hazards. Therefore, it is crucial to significantly reduce speed well in advance of the bridge. This allows for a safe stop if an obstruction is encountered and provides more time to react to oncoming vehicles that may suddenly appear over the crest. Overtaking on the approach to or on a humpback bridge is extremely dangerous and strictly prohibited.

Narrow bridges often have signs indicating their limited width and may feature 'give way' signs or markings. If a 'give way' sign is present, drivers must yield to oncoming traffic that has already entered or is closer to the bridge. If no specific 'give way' sign is present, the general principle is that the first vehicle to arrive at the bridge has priority, or drivers should exercise courtesy and common sense, often yielding to larger vehicles or those that would find it more difficult to reverse. In all cases, a slow and controlled approach is essential.

Drivers should also be aware of the potential for structural damage to vehicles if they cross humpback bridges at excessive speed, particularly for vehicles with low ground clearance or those towing trailers. The sudden change in gradient can cause vehicles to 'bottom out.' Furthermore, the surfaces of these bridges can sometimes be more prone to ice in winter or become slippery in wet conditions, necessitating even greater caution. Always anticipate the potential hazards and adjust your driving accordingly when encountering these bridge types.
